Learning from Relevant Tasks Only

چکیده
We introduce a problem called relevant subtask learning, a variant of multi-task learning. The goal is to build a classifier for a taskof-interest having too little data. We also have data for other tasks but only some are relevant, meaning they contain samples classified in the same way as in the task-of-interest. The problem is how to utilize this “background data” to improve the classifier in the task-of-interest. We show how to solve the problem for logistic regression classifiers, and show that the solution works better than a comparable multi-task learning model. The key is to assume that data of all tasks are mixtures of relevant and irrelevant samples, and model the irrelevant part with a sufficiently flexible model such that it does not distort the model of relevant data.

The Effect of Task Type and Task Orientation on L2 Vocabulary Learning
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of meaning-focused versus form-focused input-oriented and output-oriented task-based instruction on elementary level Iranian EFL Learners’ vocabulary comprehension and recall. For this purpose, a sample of 120 male students from a private school in Tehran was selected through convenience sampling and based on availability. The participants were...
متن کاملThe Effect of Different Types of Classroom Tasks on Learning New Vocabulary of a New Lesson by Iranian EFL Learners; With a Focus on High School English Books: Vision 2
Learning the new vocabulary of a new lesson by high school students before starting to teachthe whole of lesson in every session is the main concern of the writer of this study as anEnglish teacher. So the purpose of the present study is introducing some practical classroomtasks (such as, working with oxford dictionary for looking up the definitions, synonyms, antonyms and examples of new words,...
متن کاملVariational Bayes Learning from Relevant Tasks Only
We extend our recent work on relevant subtask learning, a new variant of multitask learning where the goal is to learn a good classifier for a task-of-interest with too few training samples, by exploiting “supplementary data” from several other tasks. It is crucial to model the uncertainty about which of the supplementary data samples are relevant for the task-of-interest, that is, which sample...
متن کاملThe Relative Effectiveness of Input and Output-oriented Tasks with Different Involvement Loads on the Receptive and Productive Vocabulary Knowledge of Iranian EFL Learners
Framed in a cognitive approach to task-supported L2 vocabulary learning, the present study used a pedagogical approach to investigate the relative effectiveness of tasks with different involvement loads on the vocabulary knowledge of Iranian EFL learners. The goal was to investigate the way that the construct of involvement load is related to the Input Hypothesis (Krashen, 1985) and the Output ...
متن کاملHeterogeneous multitask learning with joint sparsity constraints
Multitask learning addresses the problem of learning related tasks whose information on parameters is assumed to be shared with each other. Previous approaches usually deal with homogeneous tasks such as a set of regression tasks only or a set of classification tasks only. In this paper, we consider the problem of learning multiple related tasks, where tasks consist of predicting both continuou...
